I could talk about sustainable weddings and special events all day…that’s how I know this is the right business for me. At first, I was nervous about the interview, worried I would blank on responses or talk about things that weren’t important instead of what I really wanted to say…but once I got started, the conversation just flowed. It felt good to share my story with someone who was interested in what I do, why I do it, and how I make it happen. My own little place in the spotlight of our small town newspaper.
My Advice on DIY: Pick One
Are you getting ready to plan an event, and are a DIY sort of person?
This one’s for you.
Now, I can absolutely relate to the DIY mindset…I love being creative, I’m resourceful, and I am accustomed to tight budgets. However, here is my advice when it comes to planning your wedding, or special event.
Pick one project that is meaningful to you - do it yourself - and let the rest go.
Examples of “one meaningful project” could be, custom made garland, invitations, framed photos, centerpieces, or favors for your guests….whatever it is, make it amazing, make it you, and make it extra special. Let this project set the tone for your whole occasion - it can become the theme for all your other design decisions.
Now, I imagine you can get behind my advice so far, but here comes the hard part, and the important part…let the rest go. Why? Because you will be so consumed with the rest of the planning, preparations and decision making, that you do not need more than “one meaningful project” when it comes to tasks you could otherwise delegate. There are so many fun, creative, and time consuming parts of your planning that you must do - like finding a dress, curating your guest list, assigning tables, drafting a list of “must play” songs, or figuring out your menu…believe me, you will have many opportunities to be creative, resourceful and thrifty without trying to do everything else yourself. This is your chance to be CEO, and delegate work to others.
I’m writing this blog because I want to help you…I want you to be able to focus on what is important about your special occasion - the meaning behind it, the friends and family who will be there. I want to help make sure that you enjoy this occasion as much as possible, without worrying about all the details and trying to make sure that everything is just perfect. In order for this to happen, it’s imperative to loosen your grip on the reigns - and let go of the need to control. Letting others help and take over different aspects of the event will go a long way towards allowing you to be free to enjoy yourself - and soak up all the love and support that is there for you.
So, for those of you in the Lyons area - I am here to help with your design concept, and everything you need for your tables and decor…but for everyone else, I encourage you to utilize the resources available in your area. You can find amazing planners, caterers, venues and rental companies to do the lion’s share of the work. Sometimes a large family can be super helpful, or they can just complicate everything. Same with friends - so choose wisely. If you do decide to delegate aspects of your event to family or friends - it’s helpful to be very clear about what you would like for them to do, and then, let it go…they may not produce exactly what you had in mind…but it’s all going to be okay. Remember - your most important job is to enjoy.
